A Conversation with Volia Chajkouskaya on Belarusian Cinema in Exile

Abstract

Founder of the Northern Lights Film Festival, producer and director Volia Chajkouskaya (Volia Chaĭkoŭskaia) reflects on building Belarusian cinematic infrastructure in exile through the Northern Lights Film Festival (Paŭnochnae zzianne), the streaming platform VODBLISK, and the Belarusian Independent Film Academy. She discusses the ethics of documenting a repressive regime, the financial and legal precarity of exilic filmmaking, solidarity with Ukrainian cinema, and women’s leadership in the 2020 protests, which is at the centre of her debut feature, Not Made for Politics (2025).
